Rough Draft reflection
For this project, my partner and I wanted to come up with an idea that would help students learn more about how to take care of the environment. We wanted something that would reflect the core values of UNE while also giving students tools that would help them most with real world problems. The human race will inevitably run out of single use items and room to put them. We will need a new generation that is prepared to help or even start the process of greener thinking. UNE is not some big engineering school but that doesn’t mean that they can’t give their students the confidence to think like an environmental engineer. While UNE does a fantastic job teaching the basics of environmentalism to its students, it doesn’t have a class that teaches the nitty gritty detailed stuff that really makes a difference. We looked at other colleges that have something similar to this idea on their campus, and we came across “The Treehouse” at Dickinson College. The Treehouse was not a class, but it was a living learning community. W have a GLC on campus but it doesn’t go to the depths that the Treehouse does. Students living in the Treehouse are committed to sustainable living and are surrounded by it as well. We thought about having something similar to this but it was just too expensive, so we came up with the next best thing. With the implementation of a sustainable skills class, students will have the ability to learn how to recycle correctly, how to save gas mileage, how to save water, to grow their own food, to reuse single use items, and how easy it can be to accomplish a greener daily life.
After completing the rough draft of the project proposal I feel that I could have said more about the budget estimates of this project. I had this idea that the class would be 100% sustainable and run on reused materials that would come to no cost at all. But unfortunately I forgot to take account of the cost it takes to have someone teach the class as well as the cost to hold the class. Furthermore, I forgot that sometimes the materials that would be needed to really teach, are not always at hand for the teacher or the students. On a lighter note, I feel that I was thorough with how I explained the details of the classes whereabouts. I also felt that I could have been more detailed in the goals and objectives section as well as the justification section.
For the final draft of this project I fixed the areas that I didn’t think were detailed enough. I added in specific skills that I wanted the students to learn as well as getting more specific with the reason the class would benefit UNE. I added a more realistic $500 budget for the class and added the Environmental department as a funding source. For the justification I went furthur in depth with why the class would be a worthy addition to UNE . My partner and I also decided that we wanted the class to be person-to-person and have a max of 15 students per class.
